The Bothy Glasgow Wedding With Chinese & Scottish Elements
The Bothy Glasgow Wedding - Alicia + KB
Meet KB and Alicia, a super cool couple who got married back in the days when we weren’t allowed to hang out with too many of our nearest and dearest. It feels like a lifetime ago doesn’t it?
Yes, KB and Alicia held their wedding in Covid times, as the restrictions were easing and we were slowly getting back to some kind of normality.
Chinese wedding traditions
Their wedding at The Bothy was super cool, KB and Alicia are really chilled out and wanted a day that reflected them both and their relationship. They also included some traditional Chinese elements, a lot of which were new to me but I loved being a part of them.
My day started at Alicia’s house, she was getting ready with her pals and had just put on her red, Chinese wedding dress when KB turned up at the door. It was time for the Wedding Door Games! This is a Chinese tradition where the groom arrives at the bride’s home and has to prove himself worthy of her. Along with his groomsmen, KB had to complete a series of tasks to demonstrate his love for Alicia. It was a great laugh and a lot of fun to photograph. KB and his mates endured getting part of their legs waxed (Alicia’s bridesmaids enjoyed this a lot!) as well as brushing their teeth with wasabi and then poor KB had to eat as many dry crackers as he could. You’ll be glad to know he passed his tests with flying colours and Alicia’s family granted him permission to marry her!
Next up was the Chinese Tea Ceremony, KB and Alicia knelt before members of their family and presented them with specially brewed tea. The Chinese tea ceremony shows the joining of two families through marriage and is a symbol of the bride and groom being welcomed into each family. Check out the pictures and you’ll see that the cutest, smallest, and, well, most canine, groomsmen I’ve ever photographed also got in on the act!
Wedding photography at The Bothy Glasgow
Following a short, but very sweet, ceremony, KB, Alicia and I headed over to Ashton Lane. Any Glaswegians reading this will understand how strange it was to see it absolutely deserted. We had the place to ourselves. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it like that before.
If you don’t know then Ashton Lane is a cobbled backstreet in Glasgow’s West End. It’s lined with restaurants and bars and is, normally, full of hustle and bustle. It’s a great place to head to on a night out and if you ever find yourself in the city then make sure you check it out!
Anyway, on KB and Alicia’s wedding day, the Lane was empty. Which made for some super cool images. Once in a lifetime! We then made our way to Ruthven Lane and away down to The Bothy.
The Bothy is one of my favourite Glasgow wedding venues. It’s perfect for intimate celebrations, is really quaint and quirky, and was a great location for KB and Alicia. As their families enjoyed a few drinks and canapes we shot some Wes Anderson style portraits (right up my street!) before gathering in the dining room for speeches.
After the speeches, I left KB, Alicia, and their guests to enjoy their delicious meal - The Bothy is well known for its excellent cuisine. The fun wasn’t over though, following their wedding KB, Alicia, and I met up again for a fun and very unusual post-wedding shoot. Keep your eye out on the blog for that, it’s one of my favourite shoots to date.
